Filming Under Way In Kastel Gomilica

Filming in Croatia started a few days and the town of Kastel Gomilica seems to be the first on the list. When filming first started some photos were posted on kastela.org showing more of the set and some extras in costume.

Head on over to Kastela.org for the entire gallery of photos.

Since then, some more notable cast members have been seen on set filming.  For those images go below the break – some of it may be considered spoilerish if you don’t want to know anything about what is coming in season 5.

So who are those more notable cast members?  Well, in a set of photos released by tportal.hr and originally spotted by the crew of Watchers on the Wall,  it appears that Maisie Williams, Roger Ashton-Griffiths, Mark Gatiss, and Ian Beattie are all on the set in Kastel Gomilica.

In these images we can see Roger Ashton-Griffiths (Mace Tyrell) – who is accompanied by Ian Beattie (Ser Meryn Trant) –  shaking the hand of Mark Gatiss (Tycho Nestoris).

Here we can see Maisie Williams on the set, presumably talking with Dan Weiss.

Now for those of you who have not read through A Dance with Dragons stop reading here.  Below I’ll be talking complete spoilers about what these characters will be doing in season 5.

Lets start with Mark Gatiss, in my recent post talking about his return to season 5 I talked about the possibility of his character taking on the role of Noho Dimittis.  With these new images however it would seem that the show is changing it up a bit.  Rather than having Tycho Nestoris travel to King’s Landing, the show is instead having Mace Tyrell go to Braavos to visit with the Iron Bank, as an envoy from Westeros.  If this is the only story line the show is giving to Mark Gatiss for season 5 I will be a bit disappointed – mainly because I was looking forward to seeing Mark Gatiss and Lena Headey on screen together – however changing the story line up might give us more screen time with Mark Gatiss.

It makes sense that the show would replace the character of Harys Swyft with Mace Tyrell.  Similar to my thought process of combining Noho Dimittis’s story line from the books with Tycho Nestoris, it just makes sense to combine characters we already have a history with simply because the show is limited to 10 hours a season.  So with Mace Tyrell taking over the reins, presumably, of Harys Swyft’s story line from the books it would appear that Mace Tyrell will at some point in season 5 be appointed as Lord Treasurer.  With this position Mace Tyrell will make his way to Braavos to treat with the Iron Bank about the outstanding debt the Iron Throne currently has.

The following spoilers will include materials from The Winds of Winter sample chapter titled “Mercy”  if you have not read it do not continue reading.

Accompanying Mace Tyrell to Braavos is Ser Meryn Trant, a member of the Kingsguard.  Ser Meryn Trant has quite the history with another character who will be arriving in Braavos this season, Arya.  Now if you’ve read the sample chapter you probably know where I’m going with this – and if you haven’t read the sample chapter you really shouldn’t spoil this for yourself.  My guess is that Ser Meryn Trant will be taking on a similar role of Raff the Sweetling.  Because the history between Arya and Ser Meryn Trant is so sticky, it would make perfect sense for Arya to cross another name off her list by killing Meryn – most likely not in the same manner as Raff’s death in the chapter though, because we have already seen Arya’s role play killing in season 4.
